WIC Helps YOU Help Your FAMILY by:
providing health screenings and nutritional counseling to help you, your baby and your children stay healthy,
food packages to help you purchase healthy nutritious food,
and free lactation services to help you with your breastfed baby.
To be eligible for the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), a person must meet three criteria. The criteria are:
1. Category
Pregnant women
Women who are breastfeeding an infant (under one year of age)
Postpartum women to the sixth month after delivery
Children from birth to five years of age
2. Income
Income eligibility requires that a household have gross income at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level.
3. Nutrition Risk
Nutrition risk is any medical or health problem which can be corrected or lessened by proper amounts and types of food intake. Examples of nutrition risk are:
Low iron levels
Insufficient growth, i.e. low weight for age, low weight for height
Premature delivery
Inadequate dietary intake (types or amounts of food)
Brookside is one of three WIC offices in Jamaica Plain, along with Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center and Martha Eliot Health Center. WIC recipients are not required to be Brookside primary care patients. The WIC program is a federally funded program through the United States Department of Agriculture that provides the following services, free of charge:
Nutrition education
Nutritious supplemental food
Health and social services referrals
Breastfeeding education and peer counselor support
WIC Eligibility Requirements include:
Reside in the state of Massachusetts
Are pregnant, post-partum, or breastfeeding, or an infant/child under 5 years of age
Have a nutritional need
Have a household income less than or equal to federally specified guidelines- Income guidelines may be obtained at the WIC Office
The Official WIC program is available to low to moderate income pregnant women, recently delivered women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk. Fathers can also bring their children to apply for WIC. You may apply for WIC if you are working or unemployed. Check the Income Guidelines Table to see if you are eligible for WIC.
