WIC is a special supplemental nutrition program for eligible women, infants and children, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the South Dakota Department of Health. WICs goal is to promote and maintain the health and well-being of nutritionally at-risk women, infants and young children. WIC is available in most counties in the state, or covered by surrounding county, and is an equal opportunity program. It provides:
Nutrition education and counseling on:
Selecting and using nutritious foods
Changing eating habits/lifestyles
Improving overall health
Answering food and nutrition questions
Breast-feeding support:
Providing support & referral for breastfeeding
Education on the benefits of breastfeeding
Education on breast pumps
Healthy foods based on individual needs:
Milk
Peanut butter
Cheese
Fresh / frozen fruits and vegetables
(in the form of a cash voucher)
Canned or dried beans / peas
Juice (adults and children only, no infant juice)
Cereal
Eggs
Canned tuna, salmon or sardines (only for specific participants)
Infant baby foods: fruits / vegetables (all infants) and meat (only for breastfed infants)
Infant cereal
Infant formula
Referral to:
Doctors/nurses
Community services
Health agencies
Social service agencies such as Medicaid, Food Stamps, or TANF
Immunizations available if needed or referral
WIC serves eligible:
Women and teens who are pregnant, breast-feeding up to 12 months after delivery, or have had a baby in the last six months
Infants
Children up to age five
How do I know if I am eligible?
To be eligible, an applicant must:
Meet residency guidelines (South Dakota resident)
Have a nutrition or health risk
Meet income guidelines - see chart below; you may complete the Family Income Worksheet and take it with you to your visit
The Official WIC program is available to low to moderate income pregnant women, recently delivered women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk. Fathers can also bring their children to apply for WIC. You may apply for WIC if you are working or unemployed. Check the Income Guidelines Table to see if you are eligible for WIC.
