Supporting women, infants, children, and families, the WIC Program is dedicated to aiding low-income families, new mothers (both breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding), and infants and children up to age 5 facing nutritional risks. The program achieves this by offering crucial nutrition counseling, promoting and supporting breastfeeding, and providing various resources.
WIC resources encompass supplemental food, referrals to healthcare services, nutrition education, and assistance with breastfeeding.
WIC Program Services:
One-on-one consultations with nutritionists or trained professionals
Breastfeeding support
Referrals to healthcare and social service programs
eWIC card for purchasing healthy food for individuals and their children
WIC services are available to the following individuals and families:
Pregnant individuals, supporting the pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after birth or the conclusion of pregnancy.
Breastfeeding individuals, up to the infant's first birthday.
Postpartum individuals, up to 6 months after the birth of an infant or the conclusion of pregnancy.
Infants, up to their first birthday. WIC serves 45% of all infants born in the United States.
Children up to their fifth birthday (with applications accepted from fathers, grandparents, foster parents, or other guardians).
Eligibility:
Income guidelines set at or below 185% of the federal poverty income limit.
Eligibility criteria include completing a nutrition assessment with WIC staff
Reside in Connecticut (U.S. citizenship not mandatory, and WIC does not require proof of citizenship or immigration status).
The Official WIC program is available to low to moderate income pregnant women, recently delivered women, breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk. Fathers can also bring their children to apply for WIC. You may apply for WIC if you are working or unemployed. Check the Income Guidelines Table to see if you are eligible for WIC.
